TERROIR

THE TERROIR

Quinta da Plansel is located about 100 kilometers from Lisbon, in the southeast part of the city of Montemor-o-Novo. The property has 75 hectares of vineyards that are an integral part of the DOC zone of Évora. The region has a temperate climate with Mediterranean characteristics.

The temperatures drop quickly with the sunset and, with the maritime influence, the night temperatures fall below 18 ºC. The cool nights ensure good acidity and an aromatic profile favorable to the reference varieties of Quinta da Plansel: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Verdelho and Gouveio.

The landscape is magnificent, with vineyards dotted with olive and cork trees, with cattle peacefully invading the extensive plains, natural parks in which the winery is harmoniously integrated.

The Serra de Monfurado and the Atlantic Ocean influence the night temperature and, consequently, the terroir of Montemor-o-Novo (amplitudes up to 25º C). Granite soils predominate, in addition to areas of non-metamorphic schist, as well as gneisses or similar rocks and diorite soils. Alluvial or colluvial soils are rarely found. The vineyards are on heavy soils, slightly sloping to the south.

With the 15th century chapel, the vineyards are located on terrain rich in history and also idyllic due to its proximity to the river. The first officially certified vineyards in the country are located here, next to natural ecosystems with rare endemic wild vines (Vitis silvestris) along watercourses.  The first vineyards were planted here in 1997 with pre-propagation plants of traditional Alentejan grape varieties, but then also with noble grape varieties imported from the north of the country.

Viticultural area: 22 ha

Plantation year: 1999 - 2007

This vineyard site was acquired only in 1999 and is completely planted with vines. The acquisition of this land was a great challenge, since the family had to go against the guidelines of the official bodies in order to be able to plant there the grape varieties of the North. However, due to the special rights of the vine selection, they were able to prevail and in 2007 an adjacent neighboring plot was leased in addition.

MONTE DOS REIS

Predominant grape varieties: Trincadeira, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Alfrocheiro

Soil type: Brown Mediterranean soils of quartz-diorites and related crystallophilic rocks. Sandy loamy to clayey texture (Pmg, Pm)

Viticultural area: 20 ha

Plantation year: 2001 - 2004

This estate brings optimal conditions for the traditional grape varieties of the Alentejo. Thanks to the heavy soils, there is a tendency to quite high yields, so the grapes of Dorina's plant are heavily thinned to reduce the quantity and thus achieve an increase in quality.
